Modern farming depends on two inputs that farmers cannot control: fertiliser and energy. Both are imported, both are expensive, and both are exposed to geopolitical disruption. AmmoniQ addresses both at once.
Most European countries have no significant domestic ammonia or nitrogen fertiliser production. Sweden, for example, has zero production plants despite substantial annual demand. Every tonne is imported through supply chains vulnerable to price swings, trade restrictions, and logistics risk. At the same time, energy costs — for heating, electricity, and diesel — represent a significant and growing share of total farming costs. Carbon taxation on agriculture is already being introduced across Europe, adding further pressure.
Many farmers already generate renewable electricity through solar or wind installations, but have limited ways to store or fully utilise it. That electricity has value that is currently going to waste.
AmmoniQ’s solution and benefits
Our solution converts locally generated renewable electricity, along with air and water, into two products the farm already needs: fertiliser-grade ammonia and high-value heat. Both are produced on-site, reducing dependence on external supply chains and lowering combined input costs.
The heat output is particularly relevant for farms with high thermal demand. Greenhouse operators growing vegetables, flowers or high-tech vertical crops need reliable, affordable heat. Livestock farmers need to heat animal housing. Grain farmers need heat for drying cereals. A single AmmoniQ system serves all of these needs simultaneously.
In the longer term, ammonia produced on-farm can also serve as fuel for agricultural machinery — making the farm self-sufficient across fertiliser, heat, and fuel.
